Impact windows come in nearly every style. The right one depends on airflow, budget, view and how you use the room.

Single-hung

Only the bottom sash moves up and down. It is the most common and usually the most budget-friendly style. Good for most bedrooms and living areas.

Horizontal roller (sliding)

The sash slides side to side. Easy to operate and common in wider openings. A solid choice where height is limited.

Casement

Hinged on the side and cranked open. Casements open fully for great airflow and compress into a tight seal when closed, which helps energy and noise performance. Usually priced above single-hung.

Awning

Hinged at the top and open outward, so they can stay open in light rain. Often used for small high or bathroom openings.

Fixed (picture)

Does not open. It offers the clearest view and the tightest seal, and it is often paired with operable windows beside it. Fixed glass is well suited to large views.

Impact doors

Do not forget doors. Sliding glass doors, French doors and entry doors need protection too.

How to choose

  1. Decide where you want airflow.
  2. Check egress needs in bedrooms.
  3. Match your home's style and the association rules if you have an HOA.
  4. Compare costs. See our price guide.

Matching the style to the room

Cost and performance trade-offs

As a general guide, single-hung is the most budget-friendly, sliding and fixed units are in the middle, and casement and awning cost more but seal tightly and open fully. Large custom sizes cost more in any style. See cost per window.

Operation and maintenance

Single-hung and sliding windows have tracks that need cleaning. Casement and awning windows have cranks and hinges that benefit from occasional lubrication. All styles have weep holes and sealants that should be checked. See how to clean and maintain.

Looks and consistency

For a clean exterior, many owners keep consistent grid patterns and frame colors across the house. Some HOAs require it. Mixed styles can be done thoughtfully, for example by using casements where airflow matters and fixed units elsewhere.

Ask for samples

If possible, look at a sample window or showroom piece to judge frame thickness, hardware feel and glass tint before you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which impact window style is cheapest?

Single-hung windows are usually the most budget-friendly, depending on size and frame.

Which style gives the most airflow?

Casement and awning windows open fully and catch breezes well.

Which impact window is best for bedrooms?

Bedrooms need an escape opening. Casement and some single-hung or sliding styles can meet requirements, so ask about egress.

Can I mix different window styles in one home?

Yes. Many homes use a mix. Keep frame color and grid patterns consistent unless you want a deliberate contrast.
